EDUC 6990 has been a course that I
would have to say has been the most challenging. When I first enter this
course, I was so out of whack that I started the course on a bad note, however,
I got myself together and pulled through to make myself as well as my professor
proud. Since the beginning of this program, one key important thing that I have
learn is how to communicate with people I interact with on a daily basis. There
has to be some type of line when it comes to communicating with your colleagues
in a professional setting and those you interact with outside of the
professional environment. I also learned how important it is to be diverse
within the workplace as well as the program you may work for. When it comes to
families, we have to make sure we are respectful of their beliefs and make them
feel welcomed and important. Last but not least, from this program, I learned
the difference from listening and hearing. People believe that listening and
hearing are the same but in reality, they are not. I am proud to be a student
at Walden University because it has taught me many values and information that
I can use in my classroom and my career. As this journey come to an end, I
would like to thank my professor Dr. E for all of her help and feedback she
provides me with every week. She is very informative and honest in her
feedback. I am glad to have a teacher who offers no slack because he helped me
manage my time and to meet deadlines with no excuses. My colleagues have been
great with their motivation and feedback within the discussion board responses.
I will forever be grateful for their commitment, honesty, determination in this
class. In the future, I hope to become a director of a program that focus on
children in low income areas where I can provide high quality education to
them. I believe the children are our future and we should give them the best
that they deserve.

Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: Internationally
The first organization
that appealed to me is the organization entitled “The International Step by
Step Association.” This organization was found in 1999 and just recently
celebrated 15 years last year 2014. I chose The International Step by Step
Association also known as ISSA because of they believe in and their vision for
children. Due to my passion for young children living in poor community, I love
how ISSA “provides high quality care and educational services for all children
from birth through primary school (birth through 10 years old), with a focus on
the poorest and most disadvantage” (issa.nl, 2011). ISSA believes that a
society of families, communities and professional should work together to
empower children to reach their full potential and embrace values of social
justice and equity.
Since ISSA does not have
any job opening, I will post how to become a member of this organization and
what you have to do as a member. To become a member of ISSA, The Membership
Committee contributes to network building and to strengthening ISSA as an
international learning community. Their role is to enhance ISSA’s internal
communications, facilitate exchanges and shared learning among members. Members
of the committee provide input to the process of surveying members and mapping
members’ needs while assisting the ISSA Secretariat in membership recruitment
and retention. On key issues such as draft strategies and work plans, they
support the Board and Secretariat in consultation with members, they advise on
plans for Council Meetings and for professional development opportunities for
members. (Retrived from www.issa.nl)

Saved the children first started back in 1932 where their “Intitial programs provided clothing, school supplies and hot lunches to school children in Harlan County, Kentucky” (savethechildre.org, 2012). I chose this organization, Save the Children because they focus on giving children a healthy start and providing them what they need to give them the opportunity to learn. You are able to get involved with this organization and also provide a donation to keep this organization going. Save the children believe in saving children’s lives.

Exploring Roles in the ECE Community: Local and State Levels
For the past eight years, I have been working with children and have gained a passion for them. As a educator in preschool settings, I believe that our community is what shapes us. In the area that I reside in, I am pleased at the local community centers, recreation parks, YMCA's, and many local agencies that are around to help our families and children. In my local community as well as statewide, there are a few organization that are dear to me because of what they do for our community. The organizations are:
1.
Office of Human Affairs: The Office of Human Affairs is an agency that provides a great deal of resources to the community. The agency provides education, free information of housings and jobs, courses for first time home buyers, Pre-K four initiative, and helping youth in the community to obtain the GED. This agency also offer and early head start and head start program in five cities are the state of Virginia (Norfolk, Portsmouth, Newport News, Chesapeake, and Hampton). This agency first open in 1966 and was first name the Newport News Office of Economic Opportunity. In the year 2016, they will be celebrating 50 years of service to the community. (ohainc.org)
2.
VAECE.org which stands for the Virginia Association for Early Childhood Education is an organization that is great for educators in the state of Virginia. As a spin off of the organization NAEYC which stands for the National Association for the Education of Young Children, VAECE provides information on the state level in regards to early childhood education. I chose this agency because of its dedication to it early childhood professionals. It provides, newsletters, activities that are going on, resources, trainings, and membership opportunities for those who are interested in learning more about early childhood education.
3.
Boys and Girls Club of Hampton roads is my all time favorite organization. I love this organization because it provides the youth a place to go during summer break, after school and even promotes positive outcome for the youth. The Boys and Girls Club of Hampton Roads have been serving the community for many years. It gives children a place to go where they can stay out of trouble and do something positive.

Thank you
During this eight weeks course, my colleagues have been very supportive, honest, and motivated in the knowledge of communication and collaboration. I have learned so much regarding communication and the many types of communication. Non-Verbal is just as important as verbal communication and both are powerful. I am grateful to have met and interacted with all of my colleagues and I wish you all so much success in the future.

Groups
When I think of the adjourning stage, I think of wrapping things up and bringing it to a close. I remember there was a time when I was in a group/team that I truly loved. It was hard to leave the group because of the bond we built by working together everyday. We had obstacles can got in our way, but we stuck together no matter what. I was very heart broken when the team was broken up and sent to various location to work with other teachers and assistants. My teacher assistant and I worked great together and because of that, we were broken up and sent to other schools. I then had to learn not to get too attached to people I work with because we may not always work together.
As a team, we decided to that for our last day together, we were going to go out to eat. We really enjoyed ourselves but realize things are not going to be the same. We still keep in touch with each other and go out every once in awhile. The new team who we work with I constantly fight with each other and that's not something I am use too.
Now that I am in my masters program, I have built friendships and met colleagues who are great. It is hard to interact with each other because most of us live across the country. As my masters experience is coming to a close within the next two months, I hope that I can keep in touch with some of my classmates who I have met along the way.

Conflct Resolutions
When I think of a conflict that happened in my work place, I think of the time that a parent in my room accused me of something that never happened. The issue happened when the parent called my supervisor of allegation of her son being slap by someone and the parent assumed it was by the teacher. The parent threaten to report me to the director and have me fired. The next day I spoke with my supervisor about the allegation because I know the type of teacher I am and that's not my character. After speaking to my supervisor I felt better, but not too comfortable because I do not do well with misconceptions. That same day, the parent came in an apologized about the allegations stating that her son said a friend did it and not his teacher and that he did not tell the teacher that it happened to him. I felt relieved that the truth came out because I am passionate about my career and I wouldn't do anything to jeopardize my career choice. Till this day, the parent still apologize for almost getting me fired over a misunderstanding.
When I think of the three R's, the one that I would use the most is respect. I say respect because respect must go two ways, however, in this profession, you must stay respectful even if those individuals aren't respectful to you. A open line of communication is also needed to reduce conflict. When it comes to my parents, I almost always have a open line of communication whether its a little push, just to tell them about their child day or even to see how they are doing. In a situation that I was in, you must remain humble and respectful to parents even after a chaotic incident took place. It is always appreciated when a individual can admit they are wrong and apologize for being wrong.

Communication Assessments
When I evaluated myself, I saw something's that I do need to work on as far as Verbal aggression. What surprised me was the fact that one person scored me lower than what I score myself and one person scored me slightly higher than what I scored myself. I didn't take anything personal because I am using these scores to help me improve in my communication skills. What I have gained this week is that communication is more than just speaking, but you can also communicate through your body language. We can sometimes look at a person and tell exactly how they feel based on the way they look.

NonVerbal Vs. Verbal Communication
No Sound
I decided to watch the show “The Secret Life of the American Teenager“. When the show came on the two main characters are a woman who seems to be a mother of the teenager. The teenage had on what seemed to be a band uniform. As the mother was talking to her the teenage facial expression became agitated. After a while, the woman allowed her to go and the woman finished cooking. The teen went into the bathroom and took a pregnancy test out of her bag. The teen took the test and by her facial expression, I believe the test came out positive. The next day, the teenager went to school based on the lockers, students and the text books. As she was walking to her locker, she looked very nervous as if she was looking for someone. As she was taking her books out of her locker, two girls came up to her locker and based on their body language, they seemed to be her friend, but the teenage did not look happy to see them.
With Sound
After watching the show with sound, I was correct about the woman and the teenager. The woman was her mother and the teenager was a member of the band. The mother was in the kitchen cooking dinner for her family and she making her daughter favorite meal. When she went to school, she went to her locker and attempted to take her books out of her locker. When the girls ran to see the teenager they were her friends. They ran up with excitement to tell her they saw someone. I realized she was nervous when she first saw them, She was asking them who they saw." Once the girls explained, She then began talking to them in a nervous tone about she had sex. Her friends then asked her "With who? When? Was it good? Did you like it? After that the girl went quiet and put her head down.

Communication Behaviors
When I think of someone who
demonstrates competent communication I would have to say my mother. My mother is
a beautiful person who is always there for me and my siblings. I state my
mother because my mother is the type of person who will tell you what needs to
be said; however, she will say It in a professional manner. Even when talking
to me and my siblings about certain issues, my mother never raises her voice,
use foul language, nor disrespect us in any way. My mother is so good with
communication, that my family members use her as a communication person to get information
out within the family.
When it
comes to my mother and communication, I would want to model some of my
communication behaviors after her because my mother loves being around people and
so do I. This is why I chose the education field because I love being around
people. Children are my passion and I love to see them grow. Even with young
children, you have to have adequate communication with them. Because of how my
mother interact with others who she may know and may not know makes me want to gain
some of her communication behavior and use them within myself.

When I Think of Research
Research is a routine that is done daily in most fields of employment including early childhood education. In early childhood education, situations and issues within the field change frequently which is why research is important to keep up to date in this field of education. During my time in this course, EDUC 6163, I have gained insight on information such as, getting consent from parents and participants to have research conducted on them, information that is allowed to remain confidential and information that cannot remain confidential due to mandates within early childhood education as well as state, local, and the federal laws, doing interviews on your participants to get to know them a little better, and many triangulation within research (Mac Naughton, Rolfe, Siraj-Blatchford, 2010). When I researched information on NAEYC website, I learned that, "Children benefit from research when it used appropriately (Fleishman, 2006). When is comes to doing research, my view have changed because I learn research takes time to plan and conduct. Its not just about picking a topic and doing research on it, but about the process, time, and steps it takes to put research together. It is important that you take your time and make sure what you want to research will have a outcome instead of just a yes or no response, but explain why its either yes or no.
The lessons about planning, designing, and conducting research in early childhood that I learned is to prepare and plan before conducting research "Choose a topic that will be of interest and significance to other people" (Mac Naughton, Rolfe, Siraj-Blatchford, 2010, pg. 16), search for information on reliable sites, and know where you want to collect your data from and who will be included in your research. Research is a process and it takes time to have a successful research that will be valid, but you also have to make sure that what you observe is what you observed and not have any assumptions within it.
When it comes to research, one challenge that I had was picking a question that I wanted to get an outcome about and one that wasn't to broad. Some ways I met this challenge was getting feed back from my professor, Dr. Parrish and some ides that she provided me. She has truly been a blessing and a big help to me in this class. I am grateful to have been able to learn more about research and the process of making a research valid and successful.

Research that Benefits Children and Families—Uplifting Stories
As a mother to a young prince, I was scared when I found out he was born with a mild condition that can be deadly if its not treated. When my son was three days old, his father and I took him to his first doctor appointment to get his shots. We found out that our son had jaundice. Jaundice is yellow discoloration within the skin and eyes. It can be treated by placing your child under a UV lighting or by sitting your child in the natural sunlight. When we first found this out, I was terrified because I feared that if it wasn't treated correctly, I could risk losing my baby. I began to do my research on what I can do to help clear this faster. I was told by my son pediatrician as well as research online that breastmilk as well as constant bowel movements can help cure his jaundice. My son pediatrician also stated that I can open my curtains and sit my son in his bouncer in from of the son to help clear up his jaundice also because of the natural sun rays. Within two weeks, my son jaundice cleared up and his blood levels were normal. I was relieved and found that research can truly help you cure and ease your mind when it comes to various situation. I was relieved when I found out we no longer had to worry about my son having jaundice.

My Personal REsearch Journey.
My passion when it comes to early childhood education from birth
to age eight, the topic that is dear to me is entitled “poverty.” Poverty is
very dear to my heart especially in young children. The subtopic I chose to
focus on is “Children under the Age of 18 who live in poverty. I
chose this subtopic because I know from experience as a mother who once was in
poverty raising my now three year old son. When my son was born, I did not have
a job, I had no income and I was struggling to take care of my newborn son. I
was on government food assistance and WIC. I promised myself that I was going
to make a better life for my son and I must say, I kept my promise. It feels
good that now I no longer have to rely on the system to take care of us to make
ends meet, but I am able to help someone in need. In America, we have so many young children
living in poverty roughly, “16 million” (NCCP.org).

Final Blog Assignment
When it came to learning about early childhood education internationally, there were pros and cons with it. In my opinion, 1.) I do not recommend having students search for colleague to interact with regarding early childhood education because these individuals do not respond back. It can be many reasons why, such as the individual cannot our language and may not understand what we are asking for because early childhood education could be different where they are from. 2.) Other countries have various views on early childhood education and they may not agree with why believe it is important. Many countries do not make early childhood education important as much as we do. We believe that children should have that experience early on. Many countries don't believe in it until either their child reach a certain age or their child will attend until their child hit a certain age where a family member can watch them at home. 3.) Another consequence is researching information that you would like to know about another country, and the information is written in their language or you contact a employee and they are not able to understand you because you do not speak their language. I do believe that we should be diverse and learn about other countries, but we should be smart about it. One goal is to learn about international early childhood field, but make sure you go to sites that will have the information in your language. Go to sites that you know will have the information in you language versus going to international sites that have the information in there written language. Being diverse can help you succeed in your professional field because you can take some ideas they may list and use them within your career.

individuals. I decided to do a little research on the Center on the Developing
Child at Harvard University. At the Center on the Developing Child, they focus
on the Global Children’s Initiative. “The Global Children’s Initiative (GCI)
was established in 2009 to advance the Center’s mission internationally through
a collaborative, science-based approach to inproving the survival, health, learning,
and behavior of children facing significant adversity”(developingchild.harvard.edu.
2015).
Some of
GCI activities include “Applying the Science of Early Childhood in Brazil,
Global Learning Community: Saving Brains, Support for Faculty: Seed-Funded
Research, and GCI Funders” (). You are also able to sign up on the site for
updates to receive information on the center. GCI also provide resources such
as activities guide, multimedia, Briefs, articles and books.

Due to the fact that I still haven’t heard back from the two
ladies I contacted, I decided to stick with researching information with the
UNICEF site. This site is extremely informative and provide information
regarding children around the world. Within the article, I decided to research
an article entitled, “Child Poverty: 5 things we learned in 2014,” by David
Stewart. In the article, it talks about how 2014 has been an important year for
fighting against child poverty (Stewart, 2015). For children 18 years old and
under, Over 569 million are living on less than $1.25 a day (Stewart, 2015). This
means that 47% are in extreme poverty according to Stewart. Because poverty is something
that is happening around us every day, it makes me extremely grateful that I am
fortunate enough to help those individuals around me who may be less fortunate
than I am.
What I enjoy about this site is the information it provides
on various countries, education around the world, poverty within the world
involving children, and the many blogs they post for us to view. Unicef.org
also have a section entitled, “UNICEF reaches children in emergencies” which is
they do to help children in crisis areas. They are very passionate to children
and their families and it makes me proud to see organization caring about our
children.
•What other new insights about issues and trends in the
early childhood field did you gain from exploring the website or e-newsletter?
What I gained from this site was the programs and funds they raise for children around the world. They have a section where individuals can donate to help children in need. I also learned that they not only just raise money, focus on children, and education, but UNICEF are also involved in child protection and social inclusion, child survival which deals with children health and those who may have diseases such as HIV/AIDS, and humanitarian action.

Getting to Know Your International Contacts—Part 1
Because I was unable to get in contact with my two
contact people across the country, I decided to do the alternative which was to go UNICEF’s website and read an article about poverty in
one country. According to the article, “Child poverty is a multidimensional phenomenon and can be measured in many ways” (UNICEF.org, 2015). UNICEF has many on-going projects,
information, and tools related to child poverty measurement such as, “Monetary
and non-monetary approaches to child poverty, UNICEF-LIS collaboration mapping child poverty
in Middle Income Countries, Multiple Overlapping Deprivation Analysis (MODA), Global
Study on Child Poverty and Disparities” (unicef.org, 2015).
I
decided to research poverty in Brazil. “More than half of the world’s poor are
children. Poor children are more likely to die from pneumonia, diarrhea,
malaria, measles and HIV/AIDS, which together with malnutrition are responsible
for more than half of the deaths of children under 5 globally” (Rasella, 2013).
The Bolsa Familia Program known as BFP was launched in 2003 in Brazil. It is
the largest CCT program, with a total of 13.9 million families enrolled in 2012
(Rasella, 2013). “The Programa Saúde da Família (The Family Health Program,
FHP) is another large-scale national program, implemented in Brazil over recent
years. They found that both BFP and FHP
coverage were associated with a significant reduction of under-5 mortality
rates: the Bolsa Famila (BFP) effect was greater when the program had a high
coverage (>32%) of the total population in a municipality, and all poor
eligible population was enrolled and remained in the programme for 4 years or
more.” (Rasella, 2013).
Based on my research, I learned that poor children are more likely to catch diseases and hard to fight off due to most families not being able to afford medical insurance. Today, more families are able to get insurance through the government which takes a heavy burden off them. They are more at ease knowing that their child are cared for and able to get treatment and medication.

attention was entitled, “Promoting Good Childhood in Kathmandu. This newsletter
was in regards to ACEI members and supporters exploring early childhood development
in Napal. While there, they held mini summit which was to gain knowledge about
what's happening in the world in the area of ECD.... It is a reflection on the
condition of ECD in Nepal and provides an opportunity for participants to learn
together and hear the voices of people from grassroots level to policymakers”
