Breastfeeding your baby is a personal matter that can keep
your baby healthy and strong. Breast milk provides lots of nutrients for
infants which can help fight off germs and antibodies that cause sickness. Breast
milk is nearly a perfect mix of vitamins, protein, and fat, which is everything
that helps a baby grow (WebMD.com, 2014). Breastfeeding your baby lowers risks
of your baby having allergies or even asthma (WebMD.com, 2014). “Breastfeeding
has been linked to higher IQ scores in later childhood studies” (WebMd, 2014).
Some benefits for moms who breastfeed is the extra calories you burn which can
help you lose weight. “Breastfeeding lowers your risk of breast and ovarian
cancer”(webMD.com, 2014).
Breastfeeding
is meaningful to be because it provides so many health benefits for the baby as
well as the mother. As a mother, I breast fed my son for about six months and I
must say, I am thankful that I did decide to breast feed because I never really
had to take off from work due to my son being sick. My son was considered a healthy baby boys and doctors stated to me, "You breastfeeding your baby protects him from different diseases that are out here. The only downfall about breastfeeding my baby is that he was constantly hungry so at times I would do half breast milk and half Similac milk to keep him full longer. Overall, I would recommend breastfeeding your baby due to the major benefits it provides.

Ashley,
ReplyDeleteI actually chose not to breastfeed my children for 2 reasons; 1. I just didn't feel comfortable and I don't know why that is. 2. This was so very self fish of me but back then I was smoker and I didn't want to quit. I sometimes regret my choice and wish I would have at least tried it with one of my children. I quit smoking 6 years ago, I wish I'd had the willpower to quit back then!
How do you feel about women getting treated negatively for breastfeeding in public?
Ashley,
ReplyDeleteI also wrote about breastfeeding. I think it is the most beneficial way to get our little ones started out on the right foot. As we know, the health benefits alone are amazing reasons to breastfeed a child, but also the amazing attachment that is formed between mother and child during the process. Our bodies produce that golden nutrition for a reason, why not follow through and give it to them. I think even if a person just isn't comfortable with it they could still pump it and give it to them in a bottle, that way the baby is still getting all the benefits of breast milk.
Ashley, I did not get to breastfeed my son since he was in the NicU for 2 months...but I did pump for the entire time he was there. By the time he came home, I was no longer producing, but the doctor's wanted him to be on a certain type of milk that had extra calories to make sure he kept gaining weight. I do absolutely respect every woman who makes the choice to breastfeed, and I totally understand woman who do not choose to do so. Like you say, it is a very personal choice. I just hope women are making the best decision for themselves and their baby...and not allowing negative media to change their views.

Ashley,
ReplyDeleteIt is so interesting to learn about breastfeeding now as oppused to back when my mother gave birth. She explained that when I saw born the nurses didn't even push the idea of breastfeeding. The understanding we have now and its importance has really changed the way we look at breast feeding and I'm happy we have that better knowledge now. While breatfeeding is certainly a personal choice, I think its a really lovely idea that a mother can provide for her childs nourishment through her own body.

Hi Ashley,
ReplyDeleteI like the informational quote you selected, “Breastfeeding lowers your risk of breast and ovarian cancer” (webMD.com, 2014). It is important to breastfeed for it has so many beneficial advantages. I did not breastfeed my children I could not bring myself to do it, although I was encourage to breastfeed especially my child that was born premature. I have no explanation for it, I just could not do it. Congratulations on breastfeeding your son.
